Why Empowerment Is Often Mistaken For Anger When You Stop Abandoning Yourself | Setting Boundaries Without Guilt

What My Burn Ceremony Revealed About Boundaries, Grief, and Authentic Self-Love

There are moments in life when a choice becomes a threshold. A line is drawn between who we have been and who we are becoming. We stand at the edge of an old identity, an old story, an old energetic contract, and decide whether to continue carrying it or release it. This week, I crossed one of those thresholds..

Recently, I had a conversation with a dear friend. It was one of those conversations that arrives as a mirror, revealing something deeper beneath the surface.

As humans, we long for companionship, community, and sisterhood. We want to belong. We want harmony with those around us. Yet sometimes the very mechanisms that help us belong can also pull us away from ourselves. Our desire for acceptance can become self-abandonment. Our desire for peace can become the silencing of our own inner knowing. I had begun recognizing years earlier how easily living according to other people's expectations could become a way of disappearing from my own life.

During our conversation, I shared a decision that felt deeply empowering to me. I had chosen to hold a burning ceremony~ not as an act of anger, punishment, or resentment, but as a sacred act of release.

For years, I have carried mementos from a chapter of my life that no longer exists: photographs, keepsakes, and memories connected to children who have chosen not to have me in their lives.

Five years of grief. Five years of longing. Five years of carrying the energetic weight of a story that had already ended. Five years of shrinking myself down to fit into something they needed to be true for their perspectives to hold. Five years of giving away my worth and my power.

Setting Boundaries Without Guilt

Over time, I realized that the physical objects were anchoring me to an energetic timeline I was no longer meant to inhabit. They represented a version of my life that I had continued revisiting, not because it was alive and unfolding, but because I had not yet given myself permission to let it go.

So I made a choice. I decided to release them. No more carrying weight that doesn’t belong to me. No more longing for something that has ended to return. Just simple release and return to myself.

My friend, who is loving and kind, could not understand. She tried to talk me out of it; not because she wished me harm or lacked compassion, but because she was viewing my decision through the lens of her own experience.

For her, the choice felt unimaginable. For me, it felt liberating. This was me setting boundaries without guilt. What struck me wasn’t that we disagreed. It was how quickly empowerment can be misunderstood.

My clarity was interpreted as anger. My conviction was interpreted as resentment. My liberation was interpreted as frustration.

Yet none of those things were true. What I actually felt was expansion. I felt relief, joy, and a sense of breath returning to places within me that had been held captive by grief.

When I completed the ceremony this week, something shifted. Not because the memories disappeared. Not because the love disappeared. Not because the past suddenly ceased to matter. The shift happened because I was no longer asking the past to define my present. I was choosing myself. I was choosing my life force. I was choosing my next breath.

That realization brought me to a deeper truth: No one else can fully inhabit the path that brought you to a sacred decision. Everyone else sees your choices through the filter of their own fears, beliefs, values, wounds, and experiences. That isn’t wrong; it’s simply human. But it also means there are moments when you cannot outsource your knowing.

There are moments when your inner wisdom must become louder than external approval.

At one point, my friend asked, “Why not just do the kind thing?”

It’s a question many of us have heard in different forms throughout our lives. Why not keep the peace? Why not take the higher road? Why not be more understanding, more forgiving, more accommodating? Why not hold on just a little longer?

But what if kindness toward others has repeatedly required abandoning yourself? What if doing the “right thing” comes at the expense of your own life force? What if the compassionate choice is finally the one that includes you?

There comes a moment when choosing yourself is not selfish. It is sacred. It is necessary. It is the doorway to expansion.

I’ve come to wonder whether self-honoring choices can sometimes be interpreted as anger because they illuminate choices another person may not feel free to make for themselves. When someone witnesses another person standing firmly in their truth, it can create discomfort~ not because the truth is wrong, but because it illuminates the places where they have not yet chosen themselves.

So if someone labels your clarity as anger, interprets your boundaries as resentment, or mistakes your liberation for bitterness, pause before accepting their story. Ask yourself a simpler question:

What does your breath say?

Not your fear. Not your conditioning. Not your need for approval. Your breath. Your deepest knowing. Your living truth. I wrote about this in another article you can read here.

Because your breath already knows. It knows when something has run its course. It knows when an energetic chapter is complete. It knows when it is time to release, when it is time to stay, when it is time to walk away, and when it is time to begin again.

The burn ceremony was never about destroying the past. It was about honoring the future. It was a sacred bifurcation rite~ a conscious choice to stop feeding one timeline so that another could emerge. In that fire, I did not lose myself.

I found myself again.

You do not need permission to choose your breath. You do not need consensus to honor your knowing. And you do not need to justify the sacred choices that return you to yourself.

Where in your life are you waiting to perform your own ‘burning' ceremony’ ?

Luna
